1- The key role of the parents

The schools of Coas Educational Group sprung from the initiative and the desire of a group of parents who wanted educational centres of certain characteristics for their children. One of them is that the values that Josemaría Escrivá transmitted to the original organisers were captured faithfully in the ideario and in the educational project.

Nowadays parents share the same key role in our schools as years ago, because we understand that a quality education is only possible when the family and the school share the same values and educational principles, and when each one knows what their role is and strives to carry it out effectively and generously.

Coordination, which is vital between the family and the school, is achieved by means of a close relationship with your child's tutor, who will be available whenever you want or whenever the tutor considers it to be necessary to call a meeting.

The participation of the parents is encouraged in the school through the established channels (Association of Fathers and Mothers and the Parents in charge of Courses) to support and to collaborate jointly with the Educational Project of the school, and to help each other to be the main players in the education of their children.

2- Training for our teaching staff

The current educational context demands a combination of new methodologies with good prior didactic knowledge so that the contents of the curriculum are significant and functional for the students. This requires the teaching staff to update their educational knowledge and practice because of ground-breaking proposals which give the student a much more central and active role in the learning process.

The Educational Group COAS is aware that more and better training for our teaching staff will be reflected in a better education of our students, and help our schools reach a higher level of excellence. Therefore, our group draws up an annual retraining plan for each centre. This plan includes all the subjects on the curriculum. Also, once a year, a training day is organized for our more than 300 teachers whose objective is none other than to promote an exchange of educational experiences amongst the teachers of COAS and to provide an atmosphere for team work.

Periodically throughout the course encounters are planned between the Pedagogic area of COAS and the heads of departments of the schools during some working meetings which we call ETIS (inter-school working teams) where team work is encouraged and the development of the pedagogic projects are undertaken.

3- Customized education

In our centers each student deserves constant attention, individual treatment and an appropriate follow-through focusing on school achievement as well as integration into life at school, while respecting personal freedom at all times. This is something that distinguishes us essentially from all the other educational centers in our area.

The figure of the personal tutor arises in this way, in our centres. He is a teacher that assumes responsibility for helping the parents with each child's education, maintaining a collaborative attitude, never domineering. The tutor assists the student in his school performance, motivating and advising him. He/she is the one that encourages him day by day, to maintain a positive attitude of self-improvement, helping him in this way, to forge a strong, free and balanced personality.

In order to be able to develop this task effectively, the tutor has specific preparation and allotted time, but can also count on the commitment of the family. What characterizes the relationship between parents, teacher and student is permanent and honest dialogue. This way it is possible to detect potential problems and to treat them appropriately by maintaining close collaboration between family and school.

4- Single Sex education

The pedagogic model adopted by our schools is that of single sex, except at infant education level, guaranteeing identical professional qualifications for everybody and the same educational objectives, material and equipment.

This educational option is one of the pillars on which our educational project is built. Hence, the identity of our schools. Since these first educational centres were projected we opted for this pedagogic system to educate our students despite the equality of boys and girls in rights and duties, dignity and the human condition as it recognizes the existence of a series of innate differences characteristic of each sex and takes advantage of them to optimize their possibilities and to guarantee an equality of opportunities.

We are fully convinced that merely by recognizing and giving an appropriate treatment to the differences between women and men can we achieve equality between the sexes. Rejecting the differences causes discrimination, by treating them as limits and obstacles. By appreciating the differences it will help to create equality, and thus overcoming obvious stereotypes.

Technical and scientific advances have allowed us to make great progress in the diverse natural differences between men and women. Masculine and feminine brains, although the same in percentage terms as regards intelligence, are notably different in structure and operation with an indisputable connection between brain, hormones and behaviour. This cerebral sexual dimorphism requires an adequate approach with regard to education.
